FAQs
Q: How do I know when I need to hire an architect?
A: If you require a building permit, you will need to hire a registered architect or engineer to help you produce drawings that show your projects meets the code requirements of that municipality. An architect will also help you establish the design criteria, budget estimate and timeline, provide a means to have the project priced by a contractor, and a professional approach to the design of the space.
SPACE Spin: People come to us for more than receiving drawings to obtain their permit. SPACE is well known in the industry as a design oriented firm that can provide designs that are uniquely created for that client. We could be the right fit for you if you want something above and beyond the norm.
Q: How do I go about choosing an architect?
A: Find projects that are similar in nature to your project type and then find out who was the architect. Interview the architect and get references for those particular projects you saw. Make sure their workload is amenable to your project and make sure you meet them, and get it in writing. Review the design proposal carefully and make sure that you scope of work is covered. Make sure the architect is excited about your project and truly believes it is a good fit for the firm and will give it the proper attention it deserves.
SPACE Spin: No disrespect intended, but when you come in and talk to SPACE, we will be interviewing you as much as you are interviewing us. Our mid-range size and our success in the industry has enabled us to be able to choose our projects (and clients) very carefully. Since we are a design oriented firm, the more creative freedom potential there is, the more excited we get, and the harder we work to win the project. We are not the firm for you if you just need a set of plans drawn up and you know what you want already. We are creative problem solvers and specialize in creating environments that exceed expectations. We also are willing to provide a complete list of project contacts so you can talk to anyone we have worked for in the past.
Q: How do architects charge for their services?
A: Design firms change a variety of ways depending upon the project and client preferences. Hourly, fixed fee, or percentage of construction are all commonly used methods.
SPACE Spin: Typically, at SPACE we use one of three methods; hourly, hourly to a max fee, or fixed fee. If the scope of the project is well defined, we can often calculate a fixed fee. When the scope of the projects needs more definition, we can work on an hourly basis to define the scope, and then calculate a fixed fee for the balance of the project.
Q: Do I need an interior designer as well?
A: If the prospective architectural firm has no interior designer working for them, there is a good chance you will need to hire a interior designer to help in the selection of colors, finishes, and the general accessorizing of the space.
SPACE Spin: Yes, indeed. And, we've got that covered too.
Q: What services do I need for my project?
A: The design firm you work with can help you determine what services you need for your project, including beyond design services. Since every project is unique, services should be tailored specifically and the design fees adjusted accordingly.
SPACE Spin: At SPACE we actively seek to provide all of the design services that your project requires. We strongly believe that interiors and architecture must be coordinated and developed within one integrated firm. We will also try to persuade you to hire us for furniture selection and accessories for the same reason; holistic design under one roof will create the strongest and purest solution.
