WELCOME MACKENZIE!

Our "Monday Mackenzie" is now a Monday-Friday Mackenzie! Mackenzie has been working himself silly these last few weeks as a "one day a week" contract employee, but that just wasn't good enough for us, we needed MORE MACKENZIE! So we've whisked him away from Steele, MO and made him a full-time dude. Bio and photo to come soon!!!

Busy busy!

The temps are mild, but the office is HOT. We've got a number of projects heading into construction: Cupples 9, Pi Pizza (downtown), Nico - Franco's "little brother" in the Loop, opens Friday night (SPACE designed, and Space Constructors built). Bids for Niche and Pasteria in Clayton came in yesterday. Lafayette Habilitation will be breaking ground soon as well. Milagro Modern Mexican looks AMAZING, and just wait until it's done! We're also so excited to be continuing our relationship with St. Louis Language Immersion School, as we work with them on their temporary expansion space for 2012 at 19th and Olive.

The Luminary cocktail party was a success, we had a lot of folks in that were as excited about their future as we are!

Our Karey Brown will have a table at the Food Outreach Trivia Night this Friday night (2/24) - contact him if you'd be interested in joining him or hosting a table of your own karey@spacestl.com

SPACE gives back

http://www.theonepercent.org/About/Participants.htm

1% is an organization that pairs non-profits in need of design services with design firms willing to donate or reduce fees for a prescribed number of hours. They ask that each firm donate 1% of their participating employees’ time per year which equates to 20 hours total per person per year. SPACE has always supported local not for profit institutions, and we hope other local firms will jump on this bandwagon! We currently are providing design services for local not for profit The Luminary Center for the Arts for their new building project on Cherokee.

SPACE blog!

Here's what's going on in Tom Niemeier's mind...

http://spacestl.wordpress.com/2012/01/16/spacespeak/

Congratulations to Elizabeth Kohl!

Elizabeth Kohl is our latest licensed Architect! It takes a lot of hard work and studying to pass these tests, and she took time during her maternity leave to study (yes, with twins at home, she found time to study!) We're pretty proud of her.

Tom Niemeier on newstands AGAIN!

Tom Niemeier was recently invited to join the movers and shakers of St. Louis "Tastemakers" by Feast Magazine. Pick up a copy locally, or check it out online:

SPACE Rocks, Rolls and Runs!

Space Cadets are running in St. Louis’s first Rock N Roll half marathon this Sunday the 23rd! Greg + Kyle + Amy + Christine (who shares our office space) will all be participating in this great event which supports TASK.

Team Activities for Special Kids, or TASK, is focused on creating a safe, accepting environment where special young athletes have the opportunity to enjoy sports, recreation and social activities. We're so proud of our runners!

Loop the Loop

Lots of excitement in the offices as we send out design plans for Tom Schmidt's new restaurant Nico. Nico will be in the old Brandt's space in the Delmar Loop. Space Constructors will be building out the space and is coordinating bids now! Tom Schmidt is also the owner of SPACE designed, and award winning Franco down in Soulard. We're big fans...

A bit further east on Delmar Roberto Trevino and Rich Daniels, the hombres behind Amigo's in Kirkwood, are opening La Cantina. Located across from The Pageant, La Cantina will have the feel of an Old West Saloon with a modern twist and place a focus on small plates. Pricing drawings are being developed in office now!

We're pretty proud of our return client base - the folks we get to create with, including Tom Schmidt, Roberto Trevino and Rich Daniels, are more than clients to us, we're their biggest fans!

The Captain is returning to the Mother Ship

Tom's been busy renovating and restoring his new 100 year old home in Webster. He has received his occupancy permit and is settling in to his new digs. Matt Lung of Space Constructors was instrumental in getting this project done, and we look forward to seeing a bit more of both of them around the office now that this project is complete!

Mosaic Des Peres is OPEN!

The grand opening party is next week - make your reservation to see the latest SPACE designed hot spot. It's always an adventure working with Claus Schmitz, the genius behind Mosaic.

Mad for RAD!

Architect Kyle Nottmeier recently completed his second creation in the RAD series. The RAD Doghouse was featured in the Gimme Shelter Architects Eco-Challenge event. The structure was made out of intrinsically sustainable scrap materials salvaged from the SPACE fabrication shop – steel, bamboo and white acrylic sheets were hallmarks of the minimalist design replete with walk-out deck and zen rock garden. The RAD Doghouse follows the RAD Rig, which was co-created by architect, Neil Chace. It was featured in the FORM 2010 Functional Objects Exhibit at the Luminary Center for the Arts. The Rig prototype was designed to be hitched to a bike and intended to serve as a mobile retail unit for cycle enthusiasts.

RAD - Reuse. Appreciate. Design.

View our case study on the RAD Doghouse now. RAD Rig video coming soon. Check back soon.

Humbled By Such Generosity...

Wow! What an amazing turnout at Gimme Shelter - an Herb' n Maid giving event - at SPACE last night. 150+ architecture/design/sustainability enthusiasts and animal lovers braved the plentiful powder to join us in the Grove neighborhood. People in St. Louis are exceptionally generous. We can't wait to learn what the final fundraising tally is for the Animal House Fund

To all the eco-challengers, we can't THANK you enough for your contribution of talent, time and the expense absorbed to design and submit each exhibit piece for our auction. Some designers and engineers exceeded 150 production hours, and we know countless more were spent sourcing sustainable materials. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you for your generosity and for putting such extreme efforts into making your designs so commendable.

We'll be sharing photographs from the event shortly. In the meantime, please show a little love to our Eco-challengers and event sponsors listed below. Check them out. They are an exceptionally talented and generous group.

That's A Wrap, People...

There's a much richer story than our business cards, email signatures, company URL or social media profiles can communicate. We're encouraged by those who have expressed interest in learning more about it.

We invite you to view The SPACE Experience, a new film we're screening in the multi-media section. Storytelling wouldn't be nearly as fun solo. We are grateful to have collaborated with Greg Kiger, DP at Once Films, who helped us distill the aspects of our story that are most meaningful and relevant, particularly in such a challenging economic climate. We realize, there's no shortage of marketing materials circulating in the web sphere. We thank you for checking ours out and sharing with others who would benefit from the perspectives and experience we can offer. We like to think the film is worthy of the demands placed on your time and attention. And, ultimately, we hope you think so too.

Meet The Eco-Challengers

Go Ahead, Count 'Em. 12 "Derekisms" in 2010!

"In and of itself…"
"In a nutshell…"
"Truth be told..."
"That being said…"
"All things being equal…"
"Got a question for you…"
"Be that as it may…"
"Well, in all actuality…"
"That’s the nature of the beast…"
"I’m just saying…"
"Just so you know…"
"Sorry to bug you, but…"

In what seems like the blink of an eye, we find ourselves near the Eve of yet another New Year. Time does indeed fly when you're having fun. In that spirit, it’s easy for us to measure our year in the smile-inducing memories we’ve collected over the last twelve months at SPACE. As it the case with any family, with our unique crew of characters and diverse personalities, there are so many to consider…

From the number of “Derekisms” that we’ve documented, to the number of apologies Dee has made as some are confronted by the sheepish step near our studio entrance, to the number of times we’ve endured the INXS laden “Best of the 90’s” playlist that no one will claim ownership of, to the number of times Kyle has cracked up after impersonating a celebrity during inner-office prank calls, to the number of times we’ve had to pull Tom away from the keyboard while Tweeting, to the number of times Nick has channeled his inner MacGyver in the name of comfort, to the number of empty Margarita cups at our annual Cinco De Mayo party.

We’re thankful for the many cheerful memories that have provided brevity and kept our spirits high in what has been a challenging couple years for the architecture and building industries.  As our year comes to a close, we are also inclined to reflect and celebrate the clients and projects that made those memories and our achievements possible.

SPACE Grove Studio

And, with the passage of 2010, we certainly would be remiss to end the year without mention of the new partnerships we've established, the acknowledgements we've received and the milestones we've reached this year. Among the most notable – the completion of the new SPACE studio and fabrication shop on Manchester in the Grove, an AIA Award for Chill, The Mayor's Spirit of STL Award, a record setting studio event with the Missouri Coalition for the Environment, partnerships with the Grove Community Improvement District and Forest Park South Business Association, a successful Grove Fest, the first annual Tour De Grove Bike Race, and our annual Cinco De Mayo celebration and open-house.

To all of our clients, friends and families, we give immense thanks and hope the coming year will bring peace, good health, good cheer, great clarity, much prosperity and many joyful memories.  To you, we offer a great big SPACE A+D, "Mazel Tov!"

Modern Momentum

Congrats to SPACE Architect and mid-century modern design enthusiast, Neil Chace and the Board members of Modern STL. The organization made its social debut last night, 11.18, at Atomic Cowboy, resulting in nearly 40 new members. Modern STL seeks to amplify the need to identify and protect St. Louis' mid-century modern architecture. Feel the same? Check them out.

Session Deux - SLLIS Visioning

We're wrapping up preparations for the second of three visioning sessions for our clients and friends at The Saint Louis Language Immersion Schools. It's tomorrow, Sat., Nov. 20th 10am-12pm. The focus of this session is location and site attributes.

SLLIS is growing exponentially each year. SPACE is thrilled to be a part of the master planning process, helping to determine how the school space is shaped for the future. As part of the process, several visioning sessions are being held to help SLLIS functionally engage students, staff, parents and community members in the decision making. In these sessions, some very important questions will be answered, including:

How can the facilities express the SLLIS vision?
How will SLLIS schools make us feel?
Where will SLLIS schools be located?
What facilities needs are most important to SLLIS and students?

Over the next months three months, SLLIS invites you to participate in these very important conversations.

Wed., Nov. 10th 6-8pm : Session #1 - Design philosophy
Sat., Nov. 20th 10am-12pm : Session #2 - Location and site attributes
Tues., Nov. 30th 6-8pm : Session #3 - Programmatic requirements

All sessions will be held in the Multipurpose Room at SLLIS. To facilitate the most impactful conversation, each session is limited to 40 general parent community members. Please RSVP to Rhonda (rhonda@sllis.org) to confirm your participation.

Tails Will Be Wagging...

We're proud to be partnering with Herb'n Maid to raise funds to improve the lives of some of our favorite four-legged friends in need while sharing knowledge on sustainable design at the first annual "Gimme Shelter" Architects Eco-Challenge Exhibition.

Mark your calendar for Thursday, January 20th from 5:30-7:30 pm for a very special event benefitting the Animal House Fund.  Architects from throughout the metro area will be participating in Gimme Shelter by designing and building inventive, modern and sustainable pet abodes for auction at the exhibition. The zero carbon footprint event will be held at the SPACE studio at 4168 Manchester Avenue in the "Grove" neighborhood.

Peruse one-of-a kind competition entries and enjoy the silent auction, cocktails, live entertainment, attendance prizes, design demonstrations and much more  - all in good conscience and for a remarkable cause. View Call For Entries & Competition Guidelines now to get started.

His Superhero Cape Is Indeed Recyclable

SPACE Architect Derek Maschek continues to inspire us with his dedication to sustainable design practices and community renewal. Derek was invited to participate in TECH SCAN, a program that helps ensure the development and viability of a Built Environment program rooted in sustainable design principles for St. Louis Community College.

Southwest Garden Recognizes SPACE

Thank you to the Southwest Garden Property Owners for formally recognizing SPACE for Sustainable Development of our new studio at 4168 Manchester. We appreciate the acknowledgment immensely and look forward to working on other important projects throughout our burgeoning neighborhood.

Show-Me SLLIS

Set your remote to record Show-Me St. Louis today at 3 pm on KSDK, Channel 5. Our clients and friends at The St. Louis Language Immersion Schools will be featured.

Meet Jacksin

Ranken Jordan Pediatric Hospital is a profound place of hope and healing, and we feel so fortunate to be able to partner with the organization in multiple capacities. We're pleased that our friends, partners and clients at Ranken were featured in an article in the 11.08.10 issue of the STL Post-Dispatch. We're thrilled to share an excerpt from the story with you.

The people of Ranken Jordan care passionately, serving as children and families' advocates. The "big" hospitals save lives. Ranken gives kids their life back.  The story of Jacksin is but one of many amazing stories that highlight the impact of quality care, passion and play in the art of healing kids.

Read the SPACE case study on the Ranken Jordan replacement hospital to learn more about our architectural engagement with the organization. It's truly an inspiring place that we are proud to celebrate.

SPACE Addition

SPACE is happy to welcome Blair Kweskin to the team. An Academy of Art graduate, Blair returned to her native St. Louis after six years in San Francisco. She joins us as interior & graphic design contractor.

Primly Poised

SPACE is thrilled with the turnout and feedback from guests at the grand opening of Prime 1000 last night.

Restaunteur, Claus Schmitz partnered with SPACE to create a vastly different, atypical chop house experience. The design scheme balances modern aesthetic sensibilities and lofty, industrial touches with rustic, reclaimed design features.  A rich color palette and textures balance sleek minamalism and custom fabricated elements throughout three dining & lounge areas developed by SPACE Architects, Derek Maschek, Kyle Nottmeier, Neil Chace, Architectural Designer, Tom Young and Interior Designer, Elizabeth Cockrell.

Schmitz had the following to say about his experience collaborating with SPACE, “I’ve worked with other architects in the past on projects. But, SPACE is unique because Tom is not only phenomenally artistic, but he knows how to construct and will roll up his sleeves and jump in when necessary. And, more importantly, he treats my money like it’s his own. That’s a rare combination to have as a client."

Learn more now. Check the "Play" section again soon for a new case study on the project.

We encourage you to stop by 1000 Washington Avenue, take a look and enjoy the scrumptious menu this weekend. Visit Prime1000.com for more details.

BJC Partners With SPACE

SPACE has been named a BJC Healthcare partner! We're thrilled to be accepted into the organization's architectural and design service partnership program. It's a tremendous opportunity to work with an organization that is situated so closely to the Forest Park Southeast District and that is so vital to the development of the neighborhood we hold so dear.

Thank you to our friends at EDM Incorporated for their support and encouragement.

A Commanding Presence...

Check out the first glimpse of the mammoth neon Grove neighborhood entry marker that is being installed today.

A lot of effort went into its production and coordination by the Grove CID and Forest Park Southeast Business Association. Thank you immensely for taking such great care of our burgeoning neighborhood. Crime is down considerably, streetscaping is underway on Manchester, Tour De Grove & Grove Fest were a blast and the Grove neon presence will certainly be an unmistakable feature to the district.

SLLIS Selects SPACE A+D!

Wow! How do we translate the cloud nine expression into French, Spanish, German, Japanese, Mandarin an Farsi?

We are absolutely thrilled that our friends and Grove neighbors at St. Louis Language Immersion School notified us Friday that we have been selected to develop their master expansion plan. We're so eager to get started on the project and to help SLLIS achieve their amazing mission throughout the St. Louis community.

Carbon-neutral in 2030?

Check out the newly revamped Architecture 2030 website and learn more about the A2030 Challenge. Neil Chace - Mod Man

Architect Neil Chase has some cool projects in the works, including a new non-profit called Modern-STL, which strives for the identification, education, preservation and celebration of STL modernism. Check out Modern-STL now. Also, we invite you to check out Ridgewood - Neil's Mid-Century Modern neighborhood located in southwest STL.

More Appropro? We Think So.

Our Cocktails For A Cause fundraiser will not be hosted at the SPACE Studio as originally planned. Instead, it will be at the Grove's newest neighborhood addition, HandleBar, a bike friendly, sustainable drinking establishment at 4127 Manchester this Thursday during Happy Hour, 5:30-7:30 pm. How appropriate!

Cash raised will benefit the Pedal the Cause Fundraiser Bike team. Funding from PTC will ultimately provide life saving research and cures for cancer patients. Suggested donation - 20 greenbacks - gets you drink tix for domestic beer, PBR, red & white wines & ample camaraderie!
